After the war, Peter Sereda returned to his native collective farm, where the chairman, his friend and brother-soldier Nazar, became the chief accountant of the economy. While field crop brigades succeed and receive high praise from the government, Peter tirelessly proves that Nazar, who has become softer from fame, that livestock farming is “under attack” and financial matters are running out of control. The chairman is aware of his mistakes and "picks himself up."
